Workshop 1
Developing Theory from Qualitative Data:
The Gioia Method
Dr. Barney Tan
Date: 16 December 2021
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.
REGISTER
Abstract: Qualitative research is typically exploratory in nature, with the aim of developing, as opposed to validating,
theory. But given that qualitative data tends to be unstructured and subject to interpretation, it is challenging to
demonstrate rigor in qualitative theory development. The aim of this seminar is to discuss what is known as "The Gioia
Method", an approach to qualitative theory development that has been made popular by numerous articles published in top
business journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, and Organization Science.
The seminar will present an overview of the Gioia Method, provide an in-depth explanation of its steps, and discuss the
strengths and limitations of the research approach.
Expectation from the Participants: Preparation would be required to prepare from the materials provided before the
Workshop.
Dr. Barney Tan is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Discipline of Business Information Systems at The

Workshop 2
Case Teaching Workshop
Dr. Gopinath
Date: 16 December 2021
Time: 9:30 A.M. – 12:00 Noon
REGISTER
Abstract: Case teaching is one of the most popular pedagogies followed in management education. As a snapshot of a real
situation, a teaching case describes various challenges faced by an organization and helps the learner to empathize with
the decision makers while formulating effective solutions. An effective case discussion could help in eliciting multi
stakeholder perspectives essential for understanding and solving complex management problems. The success of a case
study as a learning tool depends on the case facilitator who has to orchestrate an effective discussion to meet the
learning objectives. Curating a coherent discussion while emancipating diverging views from the participants is
essential to make a case class effective. This workshop on Case teaching is designed with the objective of developing a
deeper understanding of the case method by providing insights on using it as an effective tool for enhancing quality of
teaching and learning process in management education. The workshop will enable the participants to select the right
cases, develop their case-based teaching plan and helps them to lead case teaching both in offline and on-line classes.
The effective use of various on-line learning tools to conduct virtual case discussions -both in synchronous and
asynchronous mode- will also be discussed in detail. The case workshop will be useful for early career management
academics who are interested in adopting participant centric learning methods in their on-line or offline class rooms,
as well as for experienced case teachers who are interested in transition from offline case teaching to on-line case
discussions.
Expectation from the Participants: Preparation may be required before the Workshop.

Workshop 3
Conducting Qualitative Research using Interpretive and Critical Perspectives
Dr Abhipsa Pal
Dr Rahul De’
Time: 9:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.
REGISTER
Abstract: Qualitative research is now increasingly gaining popularity in various management fields, and two dominant approaches
include Interpretive and Critical research perspectives. Interpretive research follows that social reality is formed as
seen from the perspectives of the individuals within the social settings, whereas the critical research domain
challenges the social structure-driven status quo, with an objective of individual emancipation. These approaches are
particularly useful for gaining insights in social science and development studies research.
The interpretive and critical approaches are heavily driven by in-depth field studies and semi-structured thorough
interviews. The workshop will discuss the step-by-step process of conducting interpretive and critical qualitative
research, with practice techniques on
(1) developing research questions with qualitative ontology and epistemology,
(2)
designing the interview questions,
(3) field observation techniques, and
(4) data analysis approaches.
Expectation from the Participants: Preparation may be required before the Workshop.
